Hearing testing that shows you exactly where you stand.
Admitting hearing loss is hard — knowing for certain shouldn’t be. A complete hearing evaluation at El Dorado Hearing gives you a clear picture of your hearing health, not just a pass or fail.

Hearing evaluations
at El Dorado Hearing of Tucson
Our hearing specialists provide an in-depth assessment that goes well beyond a quick pass/fail screening. A full evaluation identifies what type of hearing loss you have, what degree is present, and the other factors shaping your day-to-day hearing.
That level of detail is why we recommend a yearly evaluation for every adult over 60 — a screening alone simply doesn’t tell the whole story.
Below is what to expect, stage by stage, when you visit us for a hearing evaluation.
What happens during your visit
Every visit follows the same six stages, so you always know what’s coming next and why it matters.
01
Pre-evaluation consultation
Before any testing begins, a hearing instrument specialist sits down with you to talk through what brought you in, your medical history, and how hearing loss may already be affecting your life. Feel free to bring someone along — a second set of ears helps you remember what’s discussed.
01
Pre-evaluation consultation
Before your hearing evaluation, we'll discuss your hearing concerns, medical history, lifestyle, and communication needs. This helps us understand your goals and determine which tests are appropriate for you.
02
Ear canal inspection
We check your ear canal and eardrum for cerumen (earwax) buildup, which can cause temporary hearing loss and, left unattended, damage to the eardrum. We also look for any visible signs of damage before moving into sound testing.
03
Sound hearing tests
The sound test portion of our hearing evaluation will require you to enter our soundproof booth, so no outside sounds interfere with our tests. Once in the booth, the following tests will take place:
Pure tone testing
Wearing headphones, you’ll indicate when you hear tones at different volumes and pitches — pinpointing any high-frequency loss.
Bone conduction testing
Bone conduction testing checks how well the inner ear responds to sound vibrations delivered through the bones of the skull.
04
Speech hearing tests
Two more tests assess how hearing loss affects your ability to understand speech, not just detect sound.
Speech reception
Speech reception testing measures the softest level at which a person can correctly recognize and repeat familiar words.
Word recognition
You’ll repeat a series of spoken words, which tells us how the connection between ear and brain is holding up.
05
Post-evaluation consultation
We sit down with you again to walk through your results in plain language. Sometimes that means good news and a few tips to keep your hearing healthy; other times it means discussing the extent of hearing loss present and which options — such as hearing aids for sensorineural loss — fit your situation.
06
Hearing aid demo
If hearing aids are the right next step, you can try several models right in our office. Once you’ve found the fit you like, we place the order and, with many devices, offer a trial period so you can be confident before committing.
